This skill refers to the ability to play with fluidity, speed, and precision, and to have independent control of the hands and fingers. It also includes the ability to play complex and fast-paced passages.
Scales and voicings across the keyboard
This skill includes the ability to play scales, chords and voicings in different inversions and positions across the keyboard. It also includes the ability to understand and use different harmonic concepts and chord progressions.
Solo piano techniques and approaches
This skill includes the ability to play and perform solo piano music, using different techniques such as arpeggios, runs, and chord voicings. It also includes the ability to create and develop a personal style of solo piano playing.
Comping patterns
This skill includes the ability to play accompaniment patterns and styles on the piano, such as comping and rhythm patterns. It also includes the ability to understand and follow chord progressions, and to play in different musical styles and genres.
Improvisation & Soloing
The ability to create and perform new music on the fly, whether through improvisation or composing original songs. This skill includes the ability to come up with new melodies and harmonies on the spot, and to develop them into full songs. It also includes understanding music theory, chord progressions, and song structure to compose original songs.
Reading Music
The ability to read sheet music and understand musical notation. This skill includes the ability to read and interpret sheet music, including rhythm, melody, harmony and dynamics. It also includes being able to sight-read, which means playing a piece of music without prior practice.
Performance & Audition Preperation
The ability to prepare and deliver polished and professional performances or auditions. This skill includes the ability to practice and prepare a performance, including timing, stage presence and overall presentation. It also includes the ability to handle nerves and stay focused during the performance, and to make quick adjustments if necessary.
Synthesizer approaches
This skill includes knowledge of the fundamental principles of synthesis, including sound creation, modulation, and signal processing. It also includes understanding the different types of synthesis, such as subtractive, additive, and FM synthesis, and the various parameters and controls on a synthesizer. It also includes the ability to play and perform on a synthesizer, and to develop a personal approach and style when playing and creating music with a synth.
